Build A Website – Competency Task 3

Competency task 3

Imagine you are working in a school library and the principal has asked you to create a website for the library. The site will be used by the students, staff and parents of the school and will be maintained by library staff. The principal gives you the list below as guidelines to what she wants to see on the website. It is your job to come up with a design for the website which meets the criteria that has been requested.

Note: The items in red would be important criteria in a real world situation but as you are working as students it will be impossible to comply with them as you don;t have access to things like the school’s IT infrastructure or their library management system. For the purposes of this competency task we will assume that the website you create does comply with these requests and you many wish to create a ‘fake’ catalogue page to link to. Some students in the past have linked to the catalogue of their local library.

For this task students will use the Weebly software to create and host their website as it meets many of the criteria requested by the school principal.

    • Web site for a school library – either junior of senior school
    • Must be hosted with an external provider
    • Hosting must be free or very low cost
    • Has be secure and hosted by a reputable organisation
    • Using industry standard tools to create and maintain the site
    • Preference for host to be used by other school libraries
    • A community of practice is available to consult
    • The site must be maintained by staff who do not have extensive IT or content creation skills
    • Must meet Dept of Education guidelines
    • Must be able to interface with our existing IT platforms
    • Must be able to interface with library management system
    • Easy to navigate – suitable for people of all ages
    • Users will be general staff, teachers, students and volunteers
    • Must have an identifiable home page launching into rest of the site
    • Site to include:
    • Link to catalogue
    • General information about the library and staff
    • Events calendar area – timetable for the library
    • Information about the kinds of materials and services available in the library
    • Donations and volunteers area
    • Book review area – new books, staff and student reviews
    • Top tips for websites
    • Links to the library’s social media accounts
    • Search feature across the website
    • Navigation bars on each page
    • School logo included on all pages
    • Photos and images to be included
    • Video footage to be included
    • High standard, good English, no typos etc
    • Must be usable on tablet or mobile device
    • iPhone and android app available

NOTE: Since creating this competency task there have been some changes to the Weebly platform and free account are now limited to only five pages. In order to continue to use Weebly this year we will be allowing students to create a site of only five pages; the home page and four pages on the sub-level under the home page. In addition to these five pages please include a diagram of your the design of your site if you had unlimited pages. You can lay out the diagram in MS Word as I have done in the example above for competency task two. Attach the Word document to your five page website to be marked with your website.
